Who we are

We are Doulas, environmental justice advocates, mothers, and women of color, who envision a community where Mother Earth, women, and life-carriers have the utmost love, respect and opportunity to heal and be nurtured. Through sacred sovereignty and reclaiming of power, we believe life and its creation can be honored for generations to come. We envision a world where reproductive justice and environmental justice are achieved for all.

Our Mission

Tochtli Roots Co-op is dedicated to providing  full-spectrum doula care rooted in Indigenous traditional knowledge of birth and parenthood as a ceremony. We strive to co-create an experience that is grounded in deep connection with the Earth and ancestral knowledge that will lead to a liberating and healing birth. Our mission is to integrate reproductive and environmental justice so that all people can achieve health and sovereignty,  free from environmental and systemic oppression.

Why a cooperative?

For us, forming a cooperative means everyone has a seat at the table. We aim to dismantle the hierarchy that many organizations have and try a new way to approach doula and community work. We deeply believe in economic prosperity for us all and we believe a cooperative can bring prosperity and support to all who become members.

Our Team

Micaela Iron Shell-Dominguez

Micaela Iron Shell-Dominguez is a Sicangu Lakota, Apache, and Xicana woman born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She first, is a MOTHER to two beautiful children, a human rights advocate, founder/ worker owner for Moonshell Pizza Cooperative, & founder/ doula in training for Tochtli Roots Doula Cooperative, Micaela is also the co-Founder of Womxn from the Mountain, and the program coordinator and an actor for the Anishinaabe Theatre Exchange. She works hard every day to fight for environmental justice, and social justice for those of us existing today, and for our future generations, but most importantly she works hard to bring women of all backgrounds together in a way that allows them to empower each other and create strong, matriarchal bonds for future generations. Her continued pursuit is to help spread awareness and stop the violence our women and two-spirit people who have endured for centuries.

Karen Sandoval

Karen Sandoval is a community doula who has been working in and around the Denver Metro area since May of 2022, working primarily with Latine, bilingual and/or Spanish-speaking families. Graduating from Colorado State University in 2021 with her Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Studies, she knew that whatever she ended up doing in life would involve parents, caregivers, families, and young children. Through life experiences being a first-generation Latina and navigating different systems and her own reproductive journey, it led her to taking a doula workshop and shortly after, assisting her first birth and supporting a family in having a healing second birth. Karen saw the power of support, being held, and honoring the birthing person’s wants and wishes in what felt like a transcendental moment in time- there is no other feeling than being in a room when a child is born, and watching parents be reborn. Supporting birthing people that look like her, have similar histories, and that are marginalized and often dismissed and discriminated against in medical settings, are the reason and her passion for doing this work. Birth is a ceremony, and Karen hopes to honor this part of birth that is fundamentally our right to have. Reproductive Justice is a huge value of Karen’s, and she believes that people have the right to make decisions about their bodies, pregnancy, birth, and be able to raise children in safe environments, meaning socially and emotionally as well as environmentally safe and non-toxic.
